FATAL BURNING ACCIDENT.--A THOUGHTLESS MOTHER.__This afternoon an inquest was held at the Board Room at the Hospital at Landport, before the Coroner (T. A. Bramsdon, Esq.) on the body of Elizabeth Georgina Russell, aged three years and eight months. The evidence showed that the deceased was the daughter of Thomas Russell, a labourer, living at 12, Hampton-street, Southsea, and when the mother went for about an hour to work on Ivy-street on the afternoon ot the 14th instant she left the deceased with a sister of only five years in the back room, where a fire was burning without a guard around it. Screams were heard afterwards proceding from the house, and on two female neighbours named Sarah Yatman and Lucy Burgess going into the room they found the deceased's clothing in flames, which they extinguished with a mat. The child was taken to the Hospital by Mrs. Burgess, received and treated by Dr. O'Conor, but death ensued at nine o'clock the same night. The two neighbours already named and Sarah Butler, of 4, Stoke-street, Landport, gave the mother a good character for kindness and attention, but the Coroner said he concidered that the mother had been guilty of very grat thoughtlessness. The Jury endorsed the Coroner's opinion, and returned a verdict of accidental death.
