WHY O'NEIL LEFT HOME

John Thomas O'Neil, a labourer was summonded by his wife, Mary Ann Eliza O'Neil, for deserting her.—The defendant, who is away at North Shields, sent a letter to the Magistrates' Clerk saying that he failed to see where the desertion came in, as he had sent his wife money on several occasions. He left home because she hit him over the head with a poker. It appears that on the 3rd July he was dressing to go out and put on a muffler. His wife asked him to put on a collar, and he replied: " I am going where there will be no starch." and went out, and was not seen afterwards until now. — The complainant said that her husband had treated her cruelly and would not speak to her.—Colonel Holbrook: Very wise of the man. It showed tact on his part. (Laughter.)—The complainant said that she had to have two summonses taken out for ill treatment. The last time was on the 11th September, when, she alledged, he nearly tore her throat to bits and gave her a black eye. On Saturday berfore he went away he offered her 6s. 6d., and on saying it was only sixpence over the rent he picked the money up again and went out. On another occasion he went and got some beer, and on her attempting to pour out a glass he remarked " Don't drink all the beer," and again went out.—The Magirstrates' Clerk asked the complainant if he ran out of the house when she attempted to hit him with the poker, but the complainant replied " No, he walked out; I only showed him the poke."—Letters were read in Court from the plaintiff to his daughter showing that he had sent sums of money home each week for the children, but made no mention of his wife in any of the letters. Maud Louisa Jane O'Neil, 14 years old, the daughter of the defendant, said that her father was very cruel to her mother and very much addicted to drink. She saw her mother strike at her father with a poker, but it only just touched him on the back, as he managed to get out of the way. Her father had hit her several tomes, and on one occasion had threatened to kill her.—The Magistrates acknowledged that the complainant was a hard-working woman, but did not think she had shown tact. However, they ordered the defendant to pay 8s. 6d. a week towards his wife's maintenance, as well as the costs, 11s.
