DEATH FOLLOWS FALL
INQUESTS ON ELDERLY PORTMUTHIANS
Inquests were held by the City Coroner (Sir Thomas A. Bramsdon J.P.) at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday relating to the deaths of two elderly persons who had falls in their homes and had passed away at St. Mary's Hospital.
The first case was that of Henry Clay (71), labourer, of 11 Barrack Street, Old Portsmouth. His son Joseph Clay, told the Coroner that on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 9 p.m., he left his father, who was paralyzed on one side , in bed. When he returned at 9.30 he found him lying on the floor with a cut over his right eye. He said he had got out of bed and had fallen down. Witness sent for the doctor on the following morning and his father was removed to St. Mary' Hospital. where he died on Thursdat last.
Witness did not know his father was burnt on his side and could only account for it by the fact that his father would always sit close to the fire because he could not get warm enough.
Dr. J. Reeve attributed death to uræmic coma due to chronic nephritis accerlerated by toxæmia from burns and extensive bed sores.
The Coroner returned a verdict of " Accidental death."
